Getting to know: Craigo, Renault F1’s Composite Mechanic
Let’s meet Renault Sport F1’s Composite Mechanic Craig ‘Craigo’ Morgan. Because who are they, the guys behind the driver, the guys in the pit, the crew – the backbone of any successful team? Very little is said about these unsung heroes.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR JOB
I am a Composite Mechanic, which means that I look after all the bodywork, floors and general repairs of carbon components – and I’m responsible for branding both cars. During the race my position is ‘front right wheel off-man’, which means I’m responsible for removing the front right wheel in pit stops.
WHAT IS YOUR EDUCATION?
I have a GCSE, a BTEC in art & design, a HND in Design and BA Honors Degree in 3D Design and Modelmaking. After studying I moved on to do a 6 month apprenticeship at Prodrive to get some hands-on experience.
WHAT WERE THE JOB REQUIREMENTS?
It’s very important to be able to work with tight deadlines. Other than that you have to be able to work as part of a team and work to high quality standards.
HOW DID YOU GET THE JOB?
I worked with Red Bull Racing for 6 years. Then I moved to the Renault Formula One Team in 2006 working for 7 years in the modelshop. By then I wanted a more significant challenge, so I applied for the race team and I have been part of the race team for 3 years now.
WHAT IS YOUR MOST EXCITING RACE MOMENT TO DATE?
There are a few moments that stand out. At the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix in 2012 I was part of the race crew and I was so proud to see our team win! Also being 3rd on the podium last year in Belgium, against all odds – that was an amazing moment for me. And getting run over in Barcelona last year during a pit stop by Romain Grosjean, you don’t forget that either.
